FEMME FAIRLIGHT (2019)

FEMME FAIRLIGHT Copyright © 2019 Isabella Loong #sydneyandstreet. All Rights Reserved.

FEMME FAIRLIGHT is the first feature-album of the Fairlight CMI and Electric Violin by Isabella Loong. Fully composed and recorded on the Fairlight CMI IIx and Peter Vogel’s CMI Pro iPad application, #FEMMEFAIRLIGHT exhibits Loong’s human-machine employment of the Fairlight CMI as inspired by Kate Bush’s production practices.

1 CMI MACHINE

Completely recorded and composed via the Peter Vogel CMI Pro Application for iPad, ‘CMI MACHINE’, considers the diverse functions and relations of the Fairlight CMI as a digital and analogue ‘Computer Musical Instrument’. From experimentation with the Fairlight CMI as the primary instrument in my production, I discovered the plethora of musical and technical roles of the machine, ranging from sampling, synthesising and programming digital sound. ‘CMI MACHINE’ presents a soundscape narrative of the operation process using the Fairlight CMI, from starting up the machine power, loading the system disk, inserting floppy disks, typing, ejecting floppy disks and shutting down.

2 ACOUSTICA

‘ACOUSTICA’ is a tranquil, ambient work of digital and acoustic sound samples, entirely recorded and composed with the Fairlight CMI IIx. With a simple structure of layering drones, chords and motifs, the production of ‘ACOUSTICA’ is particularly inspired by Kate Bush’s application of the Fairlight CMI as an ‘atmospheric tool’ to generate a distinct aural space and musical experience.

3 GLASMASH

‘GLASMASH’ resembles a retro-inspired electronic dance track, composed and recorded with both the Fairlight CMI IIx and the Peter Vogel CMI Pro iPad Application. The work is motivated by Kate Bush’s iconic GLASMASH sample from ‘Babooshka’ (1980), and ‘Mother Stands For Comfort’ (1985), in addition to ORCH2 and ORCH5 orchestral hit from Bush’s ‘The Dreaming’ (1982).

4 CIRCUIT

‘CIRCUIT’ is a sonic experiment that features the live sounds of the Fairlight CMI IIx. The Fairlight CMI is supported by the Peter Vogel CMI Pro iPad application, and the Electric Violin with live looping, and acoustic and digital effects. This work investigates the intertwining roles of Fairlight CMI programming, synthesis and improvisation.

5 SOLO

‘SOLO’, exclusively features the Yamaha YSV104 Electric Violin sampled and processed via the Fairlight CMI IIx. From a Classical music background with Violin as my dominant instrument, ‘SOLO’ restricted my investigation of sound production to one instrument, as a substitute to Kate Bush’s sonic processing of her main vocals and Piano in her works.

‘Experiment’ (2017) is an original composition/sound artwork by Isabella Loong, an emerging Sydney-based sonic artist/composer/producer. This work explores the ethereal nature of sounds by experimenting with field recordings and digital sound manipulation. Loong initially listened for specific sounds in her domestic setting – such as the electrical humming from lights and appliances, and a dripping tap – and then captured and magnified elements of the soundscape via a contact microphone and Zoom Recorder. Using Pro Tools to apply the rhythmic convolution technique, she experimented with a digital instrument plugin, inserting the contact microphone audio track as a sample for a sine pad patch. Next, Loong added harmonic function to the non-pitched recorded sounds played through a MIDI synth instrument with adjusted parameters and audio layering. By manipulating reverb, panning, volume, and delay effects, Loong creates an immersive sonic experience in the space of the field recording.

Audio Track: http://bit.ly/listen-north-west

Filmed by Isabella Loong. Original composition by sydneyandstreet (Isabella Loong).

‘North-West’ is an audio-visual 360 virtual reality sonic experience of driving from the Sydney Harbour Bridge to the Anzac Bridge at dusk. A single moving 360° shot is accompanied by a composition of ambisonic sounds to create a multi-sensory journey, traveling between two bridges.

The various segments of the drive determine the musical structure of the spatial audio, featuring an aesthetic progression from Classical motifs and instruments to Electronic features and structure, together with retro effects and soundscape elements. Individual sounds, instrument tracks, and their corresponding placements also signify a visual element or emotion inspired by the cityscape and driving experience. For instance, the repetition of a heavy pulsating bass, kick drum and arpeggios from strings and synthesisers, mirror the perpetual motion of passing vehicles and city lights. The work further integrates digital editing and mixing of sounds from the Peter Vogel CMI Pro iPad application, as well as archival and onsite field recordings related to the urban environment.

Overall, ‘North-West’ facilitates a synergetic experience for the spectator in which the spatial audio and virtual image simultaneously generate an interactive journey.
